Learnership

MCD Training Centre currently provides training for the following Learnerships:

  • Metals production, NQF level 2 – 4
  • Fitting, NQF level 2 – 4
  • Fitting and machining, NQF level 3
  • Fitting and machining, NQF level 3
  • Welding, NQF level 2 – 4
  • Refrigeration, NQF level 2 – 4
How does Learnership training work?
  • A Learnership is a qualification and the duration is normally one (1) year with a minimum of
    120 credits obtained
  • Theoretical and practical training normally takes place at the client’s premises and in
exceptional cases, where equipment is not available, at the training provider’s premises
  • One (1) credit is equal to 10 notional hours of training and training consists of theoretical
    and practical training (exposure).
  • 40 % of the credits are normally allocated for theoretical training and the remaining 60% is
utilised for practical training and exposure onsite.
Learnerships can either be Section 18.1 or 18.2 Learnerships and the difference is stated below.
  • 18.1 Learnerships (training provided for permanent employees)
  • 18.2 Learnerships (training provided for fixed-term employees)
When a client embarks on Learnership training, the following must be considered:
  • For 18.2 learners, there normally is no problem as he/she, when attending training does
not have to be replaced in the workplace (additional staff compliment)

    • This is the best way to implement Learnerships as the cost to the company in
terms of replacing someone or overtime cost is limited
  • For 18.1 learners, there normally is an impact on manpower costs due to:
    • Overtime to replace someone in the workplace, whilst he/she attend training
    • Replacement cost when the company employs additional staff to cover for the
      learners whilst attending training
    • Clients need to consider the cost replacing someone at work when deciding to
implement 18.1 Learnership training and should be included in the budget along
      with the normal training costs
    • When attending theoretical training, the clients must also keep in mind that the
learners, whilst attending theoretical training, could be out of the business for ± 64 days during the year (40% of 120 credits, and one credits is 10 hours training)
Cost (based on 120 credits as a minimum):
  • Level 2 Learnerships ± R 40, 800.00, minimum of six learners
  • Level 3 Learnerships ± R 39, 786.00, minimum of six learners
  • Level 4 Learnerships ± R on request, minimum of six learners
